Bake and eat at the Concord Pie Baking Contest

Calling all pie bakers and pie eaters!

It’s July, and as American as apple pie. 🍎 Or blueberry pie. 🫐 Strawberry rhubarb.🍓 Peach cobbler. 🍑 Or French silk. 🍫 Don’t miss the 6th annual Concord Pie Baking Contest on July 12. 🥧 How tasty, right?

Each summer, Concord Township solicits community members with a knack for baking delicious and beautiful pies to share their talents with neighbors.

Four members of the community, selected as judges, put the pies through a rigorous gauntlet of taste testing. Just kidding…  It’s all for fun and fundraising. No Gordon Ramsey tirades or Food Network frenzies for this wholesome party.

Former library director Susan Sternberg has been a judge every year since the event began and says it’s her favorite community event. “Pie is my favorite food group,” she told me, so it seems she’s well-qualified for the position.

Although the judging is a friendly affair, there are prizes for first, second, third, and most beautiful. Want to make a gorgeous pie that tastes like cardboard? You could still win! 🤣 Maybe that’s just a “note to self.”

The annual event offers a tasty and nostalgic bite of summer celebration. This year’s organizer, Emma Leuschner (who collaborated with me on all the family adventure ideas), called the event “delicious and beautiful and a classic summertime community event.” For many in the community, it’s their favorite Concord Parks and Rec event of the year! What’s not to love about sharing homemade pies with neighbors?! 😍

After judging, the public can purchase ice cream and a slice of pie in their chosen flavor for $1 (cash payments only 💵). All proceeds benefit the Rachel Kohl Community Library. Emma suggests arriving at 1:45 pm, just before the doors open for tasting. The event draws a good crowd and gets packed quickly. The early sweet tooth gets its favorite flavor! 🐦 🪱

Do you have to live in Concord Township to participate?

Nope! Concord knows that neighbors are neighbors, regardless of artificial township lines or what name you write on the check when you pay your tax bill. We’re all part of one community and have plenty to offer each other.

If you like to bake pie, you can enter to win. If you like to eat pie, you can stop by and grab a slice while supporting our shared local library. Easy as pie. 🥧
