Our Slowtech frunk at the CFCA Trunk or Treat
Did you hear that the Chadds Ford Township Residents Association changed its name to the Chadds Ford Community Association to reflect its expanded inclusion of great people and companies that make our community better? This past Sunday, the now-CFCA hosted its second annual Trunk or Treat at Chadds Ford Elementary (its first event under its new name). Check out last year’s highlights here.

As a representative of Slowtech UCF, I showed up in my leg warmers and side pony scrunchie to remind the kiddos that ’80s and ’90s recess without screens was a blast. A friend told me I should start my styling adventure every morning with this look. Do you concur? 😉 We also outfitted the car with lots of fun games and a bright balloon arch from Pop on Pretty (one of two Pop on Pretty balloon arches at the Trunk or Treat event).
I didn’t count all the attendees, but I’d guess about 100 kids, plus many more parents and family members, showed up in costumes to collect candy from creative neighbors. Trunk hosts included individuals and a handful of local businesses that used the opportunity to get in front of lots of parents and remind them about their missions.

Innovation Train, a local business offering traveling, hands-on science and STEAM programs, hosted the winning trunk. The owner built a robot that lights up and shoots steam out of its boxy head.
We could not have asked for better weather! The setting sun cast an orange glow over the warm afternoon, which turned crisp in the fall dusk, and the night ended with a full moon. How fitting!
In addition to candy (because you can’t do Halloween without it), Slowtech UCF handed out little packets of the game of Jacks to each kiddo as a simple, screen-free way to have fun. If you haven’t met us yet, we are a grassroots organization of local parents and former teachers advocating for more intentional technology use in the classroom. We support delaying kids having their own smartphones until after 8th grade, and we encourage the district to revisit where classroom technology helps students and where it hinders the educational experience.

Overall, I love the work the Chadds Ford Community Association is doing. Over the last couple of years, their presence has grown as they’ve hosted more events that bring neighbors together for good old-fashioned fun and community building.
PSA: If this type of organization is your jam, they’re looking for additional board members. 😉
Hopefully you could make it to the Trunk or Treat event if you have young kids. If not, I’m confident the event will be back next year, so mark your calendars.
👻 Happy (almost) Halloween. 🎃
Are you a CFCA member?
