Check out the independent bookshops near Chadds Ford

Who wants to open an indie bookstore in Chadds Ford? 👀

Me! 🥰 Well… I want someone else to do it. 🙏🏼 Pretty please?

I don’t have the bandwidth or expertise to do it, but I would love to see a used and new indie bookstore in Chadds Ford. Don’t you think the Chadds Ford Village and Barn Shops would make the perfect spot for it? I don’t know, but it sounds great in my head.

Bookstores aren’t particularly profitable, if they make money at all. Thanks, Amazon. 🤬 Maybe the Chadds Ford bookstore is a few bookshelves in an existing space? Maybe it’s a shared retail storefront with an ice cream shop, a donut store, a wine bar, a flower or plant shop, a secondhand clothing store, a sandwich shop, a candy shop, a stationery store, a dessert diner, or a record store?

I recently asked for ideas about what to put in the new Village at Painters’ Crossing shops. Several people on social media suggested a bookstore, so I’m not alone!

I don’t have a plan, but if I put it out in the universe, maybe I can manifest it? Anyone want to build the indie bookstore of my dreams in Chadds Ford?

In the meantime, tomorrow is Independent Bookstore Day. Most indie bookshops are hosting a variety of events to celebrate and invite the community into their stores.

We have a handful of indie bookshops within about 10 miles of Chadds Ford. While we pine for having our own little shop, we can still visit and support these. Which ones have you visited?

The newest addition to this list, Forage Books opened in 2026 and quickly became a beloved part of Kennett Square’s Main Street. If you can’t make it into these shops, you can also support them with your online purchases. Bookshop.org and Libro.fm sell physical books and audiobooks, respectively, and support indie bookshops with each purchase.

Check out more about both of these organizations here. If you want more specific information about how these two entities support local bookstores, let me know, and I can add it. I’m a fan and regular customer of both of them.
