Five educational adventures for families near Chadds Ford

The best kind of learning happens when kids don’t realize it’s happening at all. As part of this week’s Summer Family Adventure Series, I’ve got five more outings with an educational edge. Again, Emma Leuschner agreed to collaborate on this and share her ideas.

If you don’t recall from earlier, Emma is a community builder, volunteer, nonprofit board member, mom of two, and staff member at Concord Township Parks and Recreation. She’s also a local history buff. Emma provided the inspiration for this fun story about the history of Philadelphia Cream Cheese (and the distorted story that gives New York credit for our eponymous spread).

Have you gathered yet that Emma is uniquely qualified for this collab? 💖 Her passion for the past makes her a great resource for the ed-adjacent outings we’ve lined up today. Don’t worry. No snoozefests in this festival of fun educational adventures for families in and around Chadds Ford.

Delaware Art Museum + On-Site Café | Wilmington, DE

The Delaware Art Museum is a short drive from Chadds Ford and a true treasure. The museum houses an impressive collection of American art, including significant works from the Brandywine School. Kind of a big deal given where we live.

But the real draw for families? The children’s playroom in the basement. It’s hands-on, well-designed, and built for kids who need to touch, engage, and move their little bodies. When your stomach starts to grumble, the museum also has an on-site café for lunch or a mid-visit snack, so you don’t need to plan around the drive.

With its array of offerings, the museum gives older kids and adults space to engage with art more deeply, while the children’s area gives younger ones a dedicated space to create and play. Check the museum’s website for current admission prices and any special summer programming. They often have family-focused workshops and events throughout the season.

Winterthur museum; surprisingly great place for educational adventures for families
Winterthur

Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library + On-Site Café | Wilmington, DE

Surprised to see Winterthur on the family outing list? It’s one of the country’s premier decorative arts museums, and yes, it’s spectacular for adults. But don’t underestimate the outdoor gardens and trails.

Emma recommends visiting the Enchanted Forest, an outdoor children’s playground on the grounds. It’s not a typical playground; it’s a whimsical, naturalistic space designed to invite imaginative play in a gorgeous garden setting. Kids who might not otherwise be drawn to a museum setting take to the Enchanted Forest immediately, and it gives parents permission to relax and take a breath while the kids explore.

I know you’ll want to scroll while they stroll through the Enchanted Forest. I’m drawn to the digital delusion, too. 😵‍💫 But don’t. Look around. Delight in the delightful. 🪻

Winterthur’s on-site café and dining options make it easy to stay for a full day without leaving the property. The grounds, including 60 acres of naturalistic gardens, are incredible! This is one of those places that’s been in our regional backyard for decades and deserves more love from local families. Admission includes the gardens and the Enchanted Forest; house tours are ticketed separately.

Mayday Coffee Company + Chester County History Center | West Chester, PA

How about this dynamic duo? Mayday Coffee Company and the Chester County History Center sit just across the street from one another in West Chester. Can’t beat that commute.

Stop in at Mayday for coffee, a solid breakfast, or lunch. The space is warm, and the food is good. Then walk over to Chester County’s History Center, an underrated family destination with a children’s history playroom. Full of dress-up, games, hands-on activities, and exhibits, the playroom makes history tangible for young visitors.

Check out this family-friendly Spy Day at the History Center on July 25. It says it’s best for ages 7-13, but kids of all ages (including adults) might find it fun!

If you’ve got a little mojo left after the history center, West Chester is worth a wander after your visit. The borough is full of shops, parks, and energy, and it’s a great place to let the afternoon unfold without a rigid itinerary.

Not into it? No problem. Family nap time works too.

Salty Cow + American Helicopter Museum | Westtown & West Chester, PA

The next stop is the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester. Did you know it houses one of the world’s largest collections of rotorcraft? Rotorcraft?! It’s a fancy word for a helicopter (or anything with rotor wings that takes off vertically). 🚁

Visitors can climb into and explore the impressive array of historic aircraft, including military, commercial, and experimental models. Even the adults might be captivated by the collection.

Emma pairs this educational adventure with a stop at Salty Cow in Westtown. About 15 minutes away, the beloved local creamery (with plenty more food than just ice cream) has a large park behind it where kids can run around. Perfecto! 🛝

The sequence works well in either direction: fuel up on ice cream first and let the kids decompress in the park, or save the sweet treat for after the museum as a well-earned reward. Either way, it’s a summer afternoon that covers all the bases.

Our first visit to Cookie Dope

Antique Ice Tool Museum + Cookie Dope | West Chester, PA

It’s summer, so this one is all about icy vibes of staying cool: ice tools and ice cream (and edible cookie dough to boot). 🍦

Have you heard of the Antique Ice Tool Museum? I met a member of the family who runs it at an event for Sightlines Media earlier this year, and it’s such a cool story. The father was an iceman in the natural ice industry way back when icemen were a thing.

His son eventually started his own manufactured ice-delivery business as refrigeration took hold. The son maintained his passion for ice and the history of the industry as he collected countless tools of the trade. The museum honors this legacy, and is a fun place to see some… you guessed it... antique ice tools. 🪓

Check the Antique Ice Tool Museum website. They have limited hours and occasionally offer appointments. It’s a small, family-run operation.

After pondering the history of ice, how about eating some ice cream? Exactly no one will complain about ending the adventure at Cookie Dope, an edible cookie dough and ice cream shop in West Chester. It’s a quick 4-5 minute drive from the museum.

I know. I know. Parking in downtown West Chester is kind of annoying. There’s a parking garage not far from Cookie Dope. Park and walk the short block or two instead of circling for the perfect (rarely-to-be-found) street parking spot.

Did you catch ’em all?

That’s a wrap on our wrap-up of family outings and fun day trips for summer adventure in and around Chadds Ford. Thank you to Emma for being our guide through most of the itineraries. She’s a gem!

I am sure there are so many other ideas! Leave them in the comments, so we can all check them out!
